Environmental records shattered as climate change 'plays out before us'

Temperatures, sea levels and carbon dioxide all hit milestones amid extreme weather in 2015, major international ‘state of the climate’ report finds

The world is careening towards an environment never experienced before by humans, with the temperature of the air and oceans breaking records, sea levels reaching historic highs and carbon dioxide surpassing a key milestone, a major international report has found.
The “state of the climate” report, led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) with input from hundreds of scientists from 62 countries, confirmed there was a “toppling of several symbolic mileposts” in heat, sea level rise and extreme weather in 2015.
“The impacts of climate change are no longer subtle,” Michael Mann, a leading climatologist at Penn State, told the Guardian. “They are playing out before us, in real time. The 2015 numbers drive that home.”

Last year was the warmest on record, with the annual surface temperature beating the previous mark set in 2014 by 0.1C. This means that the world is now 1C warmer than it was in pre-industrial times, largely due to a huge escalation in the production of greenhouse gases. The UN has already said that 2016 is highly likely to break the annual record again, after 14 straight months of extreme heat aided by a hefty El Niño climatic event, a weather event that typically raises temperatures around the world.
The oceans, which absorb more than 90% of the extra CO2 pumped into the atmosphere, also reached a new record temperature, with sharp spikes in the El Niño-dominated eastern Pacific, which was 2C warmer than the long-term average, and the Arctic, where the temperature in August hit a dizzying 8C above average.

The thermal expansion of the oceans, compounded by melting glaciers, resulted in the highest global sea level on record in 2015. The oceans are around 70mm higher than the 1993 average, which is when comprehensive satellite measurements of sea levels began. The seas are rising at an average rate of 3.3mm a year, with the western Pacific and Indian Oceans experiencing the fastest increases.
These changes are being driven by a CO2 concentration that surpassed the symbolic 400 parts per million mark at the Mauna Loa research station in Hawaii last year. The Noaa report states that the global CO2 level was a touch under this, at 399.4ppm, an increase of 2.2ppm compared to 2014.

Noaa said other “remarkable” changes in 2015 include the Arctic’s lowest maximum sea ice extent in the 37-year satellite record, recorded in February 2015. The world’s alpine glaciers recorded a net annual loss of ice for the 36th consecutive year and the Greenland ice sheet, which would balloon sea levels by around 7m should it disintegrate, experienced melting over more than 50% of its surface.
The rapid changes in the climate may have profound consequences for humans and other species. In June last year, a severe heatwave claimed over 1,000 lives in Karachi, Pakistan. Severe drought caused food shortages for millions of people in Ethiopia, with a lack of rainfall resulting in “intense and widespread” forest fires in Indonesia that belched out a vast quantity of greenhouse gas.
Diminishing sea ice is causing major walrus herds to haul themselves out on to land. Arctic marine species, such as snailfish and polar cod, are being pushed out of the region by species coming from further south, attracted to the warming waters. A huge algal bloom off the west coast of North America harmed marine life and fisheries.

Scientists have said there were underlying climate change trends at play but last year was also influenced by the strong El Niño event, which is when equatorial Pacific waters warm, leading to an array of weather effects around the world. El Niño has also helped spur searing heat in 2016 but has now petered out.
Thomas Karl, director of Noaa national centers for environmental information, said that last year’s climate “was shaped both by long-term change and an El Niño event. When we think about being climate resilient, both of these time scales are important to consider.
“Last year’s El Niño was a clear reminder of how short-term events can amplify the relative influence and impacts stemming from longer-term warming trends.”
Kate Willett, a senior scientist at Britain’s Met Office, said that there was a 75% annual increase in the amount of land that experienced severe drought last year.
“Looking at a range of climate measurements, 2015 was yet another highly significant year,” she said. “Not only was 2015 the warmest year on record by a large margin, it was also another year when the levels of dominant greenhouse gases reached new peaks.”
The state of the climate report is now in its 26th year. The peer-reviewed series is published annually by the American Meteorological Society.

Zionisme is inderdaad racisme

Zionisme is inderdaad racisme

Waarom?

In zijn in 1987 verschenen boek ‘The Birth of Israel – myths and realities’ ontkracht hij zeven zionistische mythes over 1948.

Palestinian president plans to sue Britain over 1917 Balfour Declaration and support for 'Israeli crimes'

The declaration announced the British government's support for a Jewish homeland in Palestine
The Palestinian president has announced his intention to sue the British Government over a 1917 declaration that paved the way for the creation of Israel.
Mahmoud Abbas’ statement, delivered in his absence by foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki, was given at the opening of this week’s Arab League summit in Mauritania.
It called on other states in the alliance to help the Palestinian government launch a lawsuit against the UK over the Balfour Declaration and the subsequent creation of Israel in 1948.

Mr Abbas accused Britain of supporting “Israeli crimes” since the end of the Mandate for Palestine, and claimed the country was among the parties responsible for the exodus of Palestinian refugees.
“Nearly a century has passed since the issuance of the Balfour Declaration in 1917,” his statement said according to a transcript published by the Wafa news agency.
“And based on this ill-omened promise hundreds of thousands of Jews were moved from Europe and elsewhere to Palestine at the expense of our Palestinian people whose parents and grandparents had lived for thousands of years on the soil of their homeland.”
Mr al-Maliki told delegates in Nouakchott the lawsuit would be filed in an international court but did not give further details.
The speech characterised the Balfour Declaration as a “fateful promise from those who do not own to those who do not deserve”.
A letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Lionel Walter Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish Community, it said the government of the time favoured the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people in Palestine”.
The text was read as support for the Zionist movement and was later incorporated into a peace treaty with the Ottoman Empire and the British Mandate for Palestine, despite contradicting other agreements.
Israel declared independence in 1948 after the mandate expired and won the subsequent Arab-Israeli War, prompting significant demographic change in the region.
Gilad Erdan, the Israeli public security minister, called Mr Abbas’ statement “strange but not accidental” coming in the lead-up to 2017, which will mark a century since the declaration and 50 years since the Six Day War that saw Israel seize control of the Gaza Strip, West Bank and East Jerusalem.
“Palestinian leaders haven't been interested in peace for some time already,” Mr Erdan told Haaretz. “The only goal is to de-legitimise Israel.”
A spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office toldThe Independent it was aware of Mr al-Maliki’s speech on Monday but gave no further comment.
The speech came at a time of heightened tension in Israel and the West Bank following a series of stabbing attacks by Palestinians and security crackdowns by Israeli forces that have prompted concerns over excessive use of force by the UN.

Len McCluskey: intelligence services using 'dark practices' against Corbyn

Unite boss says he believes security agents are posing as supporters of Labour leader to abuse rebel MPs

Intelligence services posing as Jeremy Corbyn supporters could be behind the abuse and intimidation of MPs on social media in an attempt to “stir up trouble” for the Labour leader, the Unite boss Len McCluskey has suggested.
In an interview with the Guardian, the general secretary of the UK’s largest trade union and one of Corbyn’s strongest supporters said he thought “dark practices” would ultimately be uncovered by the 30-year rule, under which classified documents are released into the public domain three decades after being written.
Asked if he believed the online abuse of Corbyn’s critics was posted by people trying to discredit his supporters, McCluskey said: “Of course, of course. Do people believe for one second that the security forces are not involved in dark practices?
“I have been around long enough … the type of stuff that we ultimately find out about, about who was involved in who, the 30-year rule.
“We found out just a couple of years ago that the chair of my union then, the Transport and General Workers Union, was an MI5 informant at the time that there was a strike taking place that I personally as a worker was involved in. [In] 1972, I was on strike for six weeks. And 30 years later it comes out that the chair of my union at that time was an MI5 informant.”
Asked again if he believed that classified documents would eventually reveal the involvement of security forces in Corbyn’s leadership difficulties, McCluskey said: “Well I tell you what, anybody who thinks that that isn’t happening doesn’t live in the same world that I live in.
“Do you think that there’s not all kinds of rightwingers who are not secretly able to disguise themselves and stir up trouble? I find it amazing if people think that isn’t happening.”
McCluskey said he believed that MPs and others who had spoken of death threats and intimidation were exaggerating the extent of those threats.
“There’s a hysteria being whipped up,” he said. “A few people say things they shouldn’t and then it’s blown up out of all proportion, to suit the imagery that theLabour party has somehow become a cesspit, and suddenly it’s a crisis.”
McCluskey said he condemned the threats, but he was unsure what politicians could do to stop it. “God knows how you can control social media,” he said. “I know the more vicious elements hide their identities... But how can you control them? Who are they?”
A Whitehall source with knowledge of the intelligence services rejected the accusation. “MI5 are focused on protecting the country and its people from the very real threat of terrorist attacks and would never - and could never - engage in this type of activity,” the source said. “MI5’s activities are subject to rigorous oversight and to the law.”

Reacting to McCluskey’s claims, Angela Eagle, the Labour MP who challenged Corbyn for the leadership before dropping out to endorse fellow rival Owen Smith, said: “I’ve known Len for 40 years. I worked with him and other trade unions on combating the Tories’ awful trade union bill and on stopping Sunday trading changes, and he knows I spent years working for the trade union movement. His comments are over the top.”
The day after Eagle announced she was to challenge Corbyn, a brick was thrown through a window of the building where her constituency office is based. Her local constituency party, which has threatened to deselect Eagle, was suspended this week amid allegations of bullying.
Last week a man in Paisley, Renfrewshire, wasarrested on suspicion of threatening to kill Eagle. He has since been released on police bail.
“These are serious issues,” Eagle said. “Rape threats, death threats and organised bullying are not something to be ignored or minimised. We have a democracy and we need Labour politics of solidarity to avoid the kind of anger and hostility that the politics of division inspires.
“We need to unite the Labour movement so we can take on the Tories and heal the country, not continue to ignore the cancer of political violence that has been unleashed in the last few months.”
Former home secretary Jacqui Smith called McCluskey’s comments “a downright insult to the dedicated staff of MI5 who are actually working day and night to protect us from terrorism.”
McCluskey’s relationship with Labour MPs who back Smith for the leadership has significantly deteriorated in recent weeks, including with his former flatmate Tom Watson.
The Labour deputy leader had tried to get the union boss to be the mediator to heal the divisions between the parliamentary party and trade unions and the leadership, but McCluskey later alleged that Watson had sabotaged the process by pulling out of the last round of talks, which had been ongoing intermittently for several days.Watson said talks had ended when Corbyn had made it clear his leadership was not up for negotiation under any circumstances.
On a blog for the Huffington Post, McCluskey said Watson had “no scruples” and had underestimated the unity and strength of union backing for Corbyn.
McCluskey said he had initially not wanted to support mandatory reselection of Labour MPs, but said the rebellion against Corbyn had made him unwilling to argue against it. A motion calling for Labour to adopt it was submitted to Unite’s policy conference last week.
“My executive had decided to oppose it,” he said. “And had the executive opposed it, I think the conference would have opposed it. But the mood changed dramatically, and the executive supported it.
“This crazy vote of no confidence [in Corbyn], this mass resignation, this coup attempt – and you know, it’s Newton’s third law of motion, isn’t it? For every action there is a reaction. And it changed me. So although I asked the executive not to take that position, I didn’t go into the ditch to die for it. I voted with the executive.”
